• “Marathon” is a Greek word meaning “fennel” (a plant). The Battle of Marathon was fought on a plain that was once covered with fennel plants. The distance between the town of Marathon and Athens is about 26 miles. After winning the battle, a Greek soldier ran to Athens to announce the victory.
